At its centre, the Palmier fountain (built in 1808), commemorates the victories of Napoleon. Four statues stand at the base of the column: allegories of Vigilance, Justice, Strength and Prudence.

The Place is known for its theatres which host some of the cultural highlights of Paris. The Théâtre du Châtelet and Théâtre de la Ville put on concerts, musicals, contemporary dance, and conferences. They were both built at the behest of Baron Haussmann as part of his renovation of Paris.
